Mission Control: Understanding Dashboard Permission Levels

Overview

This article explains the different permission levels available for dashboards in Wingmate and what each one allows users or groups to do. Understanding permission levels helps you control who can view, interact with, or manage each dashboard in your Dashboard Library.

What are Dashboard Permissions?

Dashboard Permissions determine what actions a specific user or group can take on a given dashboard. Permissions are set individually for each dashboard in the Dashboard Permissions modal, accessible via the shield icon in the Dashboard Library.

Permissions can be assigned to individual Users, Groups, or the entire Tenant (all users in your Wingmate account). Each person or group can be given one or more of the four permission levels.

The Four Permission Levels

1. Read

The Read permission is the most basic level of access. A user with Read access can open and view the dashboard and all of its data, but cannot make any changes or leave any comments. This is the default permission level assigned when a new user is added to a dashboard.

Best for: Stakeholders or team members who need visibility into the data but should not be able to modify anything.

2. Comment

The Comment permission builds on Read access. A user with Comment access can view the dashboard and also leave comments — useful for annotating data, flagging items, or collaborating with teammates directly on the dashboard.

Best for: Team members who need to collaborate or provide feedback on dashboard data without being able to edit it.

3. Write

The Write permission grants the ability to view, comment, and also edit the dashboard itself. This includes modifying charts, filters, layout, or any other dashboard configuration. Write access is typically reserved for team members who are responsible for maintaining or updating the dashboard.

Best for: Dashboard owners, analytics leads, or managers who need to keep the dashboard up to date.

4. Delete

Delete

The Delete permission is the highest level of access. In addition to everything Write access allows, a user with Delete access can permanently remove the dashboard from Wingmate. This permission should be granted sparingly and only to users who are accountable for managing the dashboard lifecycle.

Best for: Admins or senior team leads responsible for overall dashboard governance.
